Progression - Job Oppourtunities - Art Teacher

Progression - Job Opportunities - Art Teacher

Thinking about my personal development and progression in my field i decided to research more upon potential job opportunities and career paths. one that has become very interesting to me and a strong choice is to become an art teacher. there is a range of reasons i would want to do this job, the most prominent being security and rate of pay. i feel that although no job is 100% secure that being a teacher would be more secure financially then being a freelance artist. As a freelancer work may never come about for months however when looking into being a teacher i saw over 20 listings on Newcastle City Council website asking for art teachers. This become immediately appealing to me and only progressed even further when i seen that the wages are also very well paying.

I guess that i am looking at this job as a way of not fulfilling my personal want but just being able to live comfortable, while it would be the dream job to create art all the time and sell is for X amounts, its very hard to climb up to that point and it may never happen. With a job as an art teacher i can have that comfort of knowing I'm able to get work as a permanent member of staff or as a supply teacher and furthermore whilst doing this i can create artwork in my own time and still attend to that dream of being a successful freelance artist.

To go about achieving this position and title i would first have to complete my full honours degree which would be my third year at college or university. After this i would then go into one of two route of becoming a teacher. the first route is at a university where i study to become a teacher in a non-working role where i receive a small grant to cover the year. the second option is a GPT where i  would be employed as a member of student staff at a school or college and work with an art teacher and i would be classed as working for the school and cover my costs by being paid by the school. Whilst it was all good and informative reading online about this i felt it would be batter to understand how to go about this by asking an actual teacher. I had the ease and bonus of having friends who are or were teachers. I asked them about how they liked their jobs and what they went through to get there. i understand its hard work and takes a lot of time up but after hearing their opinions i feel that it would for me be very rewarding personally and materialistically.

Teacher training research 2014

Sunderland University

This initial teacher training course equips you to share your passion for English with young people and inspire them to fulfil their potential. English is a core subject in the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 so there will always be a need for effective and committed English teachers.
The course prepares you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is an essential qualification for teaching in state-maintained schools. The Government is offering scholarships to attract more graduates into teaching, and so students training to become English teachers in 2014/15 can access  up to £9,000 in Government bursaries.

The course has two strands. The first strand is based at the University and provides a solid grounding in theory and practical issues. The second strand is based in partner schools where you will undertake practical teaching experience. A high proportion of our trainees subsequently obtain teaching posts in schools where they have completed successful placements.

The University of Sunderland is one of only 25 ‘outstanding’ teacher-training institutions in the UK, according to Ofsted. So you can be confident that our courses are excellent preparation for a satisfying and rewarding career.

The 2011 Ofsted report on our secondary provision rated Sunderland as ‘outstanding’ for attainment of trainees, capacity to fulfil the potential of trainees, and effective and efficient use of resources.

The Ofsted report on our secondary phase also included the following comments: “all aspects of training are highly coherent”; “there is a very high level of commitment from all staff”; “strong attention is paid to individual needs”.

In addition to Government bursaries, students on this course are also eligible for many of the University of Sunderland scholarships. Full details of the Sunderland scholarships available to you  can be found on the Entry requirements tab of this course.

Northumbria University
Secondary Education: Art, Craft and Design PGCE

COURSE INFORMATION (2014 ENTRY)
1 year full-time
Health and Life Sciences
Coach Lane Campus

This specialist programme is structured to develop the required skills, knowledge, understanding, personal and professional standards necessary to teach pupils Art, Craft and Design  at Key Stage 3 and 4, as well as opportunities to experience planning and teaching at post 16 education levels.
Teaching is a diverse, creative and dynamic profession and the design of the programme reflects this. A strong foundation of experiential learning in the school environment is complemented by a comprehensive support system of mentoring and guidance in Professional Practice Placements. Students underpin this practice with theory and academic research opportunities and are encouraged to experiment with a variety of teaching styles and strategies, to achieve high professional standards, as well as to continue to develop expertise in the skills and techniques needed to be an excellent art, craft and design teacher and practitioner.
Through partnerships with Primary and Secondary schools, museums, galleries, community groups and artists from a broad spectrum of disciplines we offer trainees the opportunity to gain a PGCE in Secondary Art and Design with Qualified Teacher Status.
The Partnerships in the Programme
At Northumbria University we have a strong ethos of working with partners in the artistic community to give our trainee teachers a strong flavour of the opportunities available to support them during and beyond studying for a PGCE with us.
Secondary Schools
Our partner schools located throughout this large region are diverse, with enthusiastic and highly professional staff, who offer exciting and supportive environments to gain training experience.
Primary Schools
We enjoy partnerships with Primary Schools who have a particular strength in Art, Craft and Design education to enable trainees to place their chosen specialist age group in context.
Museums and Galleries
We run projects with the Shipley Art Gallery which holds the North East’s Contemporary Craft Collection. Trainees have the opportunity to develop their subject knowledge, work with community groups and develop relationships with arts organisations, artists, curators and museum educationalists. We have strong links with the new BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art with the resulting partnership being one which aims to push traditional boundaries, explore and experiment with ideas and new initiatives, use BALTIC’s resources and design new ways of integrating Contemporary Art in education. This innovative partnership creates a unique focus for trainees studying with Northumbria University.
University Based Programmes
The components offered through partnerships are complemented with lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials held at Coach Lane Campus and in some placement schools.
A programme of professional studies is offered by a range of highly professional and experienced lecturers, their aim being to develop trainees understanding of educational policy and procedures, teaching and learning theory and practice and planning, assessment and evaluation procedures. More subject specific approaches are explored through curriculum studies session. Through a highly successful timetable of workshops programmed in placement schools, trainees expand their subject knowledge and address any skills gaps that they may initially have.
Please Note: we do not accept deferred applications
for this programme

LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
Students are assessed against the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status. Professional practice is undertaken and assessed in two different schools within the North East region. In addition, assignments, projects and a professional portfolio provide further evidence of suitability to enter the teaching profession. Two of the four modules are assessed at Masters level to gain a Postgraduate Certificate and 60 credit towards a Masters qualification.

CAREERS
The majority of students enter the teaching profession as secondary school teachers; a small number find employment in such areas as further education and arts administration. An excellent reputation as a training programme has resulted in our trainees being highly employable. To date all our trainees have found employment. As part of the training an in depth programme of support has been designed to carefully prepare trainees for the application procedure and interview process.

FUNDING
You may be eligible for a training bursary. More information can be found by visiting the National College for Teaching and Leaderships website http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into- teaching .

OTHER INFO

Here is an example of an application form that i found that inspired me further to potentially take on this job role. I feel that with the appropriate training i can otherwise fulfill all the other requirements of being knowledgeable enough to teach and be passionate about my subject area.
