Artist Research - Freelancer/digital painter - Sakimi Chan

Looking at the Artist Store

Looking at a non-commercial artist i decided to review one of my personal favourite blog based artists Sakimi Chan. Sakimi ( pen name ) is a Canadian based artist who rather then work for big companies or illustrate for books etc, rather opens internet based art store where they take commission fees from her for everything she sells. there are several online stores that use this function such as StoreEnvy, Society6 and deviant art. Since these site print the artwork for her this removes all of the postal work for her and she can just focus on creating multitudes of artwork to upload and sell.

this is one of the reasons i have been following this artist for some time now as i also wish to use this fucnction and have tried to in the past. i have two different views on this fuction of selling artwork. one is that we remove and need to do anything past creating the artwork. all of the hard chore is done for us. i see this as a positive becuase it gives the artist more time to focus on creating and also it coversthe cost of printing in the ocmmision fee meaning the artist dosen't have to find a printer then pay for postage too. one negitive point to thisi can see is that it removes the experiance of selling a poster to someone infront of you becuase theres no need to. i however, who have held stores at ocnventions, feel that this is a very important part of the process of getting to know and talk to your audiance face to face and discuss what they feel and think about your artwork. so im undecided if i like online print stores or not.

As for Sakimi's artwork I've been following it for the past few years and i really enjoy her mix of realism with cartoonism. though the skin texture and lighting and shading is all very realistic and the faces have that look of realism we can identify an underlying hint of cartoonism that makes the characters stand out more and have more of a visual presence on screen. Sakimi's works mainly contain the theme of transforming well known cartoon and film characters into her own rendition wether that involves remodeling them completely or just redrawing their basic design in her own style.
