Contemporary character research
Motomichi Nakamura
a presentational music video displayed
at 2011 pictoplasma. It is a music video with the 2d animation being
created after the music. Meaning that the animation was post audio
and specifically created for it. I always enjoy Motomichi's work as
its quirky yet very simple at the same time. The colour of the
animations is simple too. Characters are kept in a black silhouette
and the background is a lighter colour, often reflecting the theme
and atmosphere of the animation such as the blue reflecting the calm
tranquil state.

J. G. Quintel Regular Show
A recent children’s animation. The
main focus of the show is the two lead characters Rigby and Mordecai.
Both characters feature anthropomorphic features and live what we
would consider normal human student lives. The animation is very
pleasant and has many classic animation features such as hand drawn
characters and scenes with new cgi technology implemented into it. I
wanted to look into this animation series because it relates to my
characters design and I wanted to see an already animated
anthropomorphic character do what my character was meant to do.
Dreamworks – Rise of the guardians
A recent cgi animation created by
dreamworks. The story retells the story’s of old holiday fables and
the characters linked to them. I wanted to look at this animation
because it takes a contemporary restyle on old classic fables and
folk lore. Also because it redesigns characters to suit the era they
are in which is what I have to do to my own character. It takes an
interesting spin on the well known characters that have been in many
people's lives old and young and its interesting how their
personalities have been portrayed so that they seems more interesting
to the younger audiences of the current era. Its a sharp dynamic
change to what older people think of these characters.
The adventures of TinTin – Weta
digital
After looking at characters that had
been remade I decided to look at an animation that had been remade
instead. Looking at the character design of the 3d cgi model of the
new TinTin we can see that even though the form of animation is
different the old 2d character designs and presentation is the same.
The character has the same face shape, hair, clothes and
characteristics. This shows that a characters design doesn’t have
to be altered to be in a different form of animation and that the
designs can carry through different media.
in contrast to classic
disney or warner brothers animtions we have new childrens programs
such as adventure time. The character designs are bizarre and totally
different to old cartoons. Old carttons had chaarcters that were
recognisable as a certain object or animal, however characters in
this show are any shape, any size and any colour. It shows that
anything you think of can be a character aslong as you give it a
personality.
