Artist Research - 3D Sculptor - Sam Yang

Artist Research - 3D Sculptor - Sam Yang

After becoming keenly interested in jobs at studios such as Riot Games i decided to look through their art team and which different departments of work they had. taking a look at an area i don't normally take interest in i decided to take a look at their 3D specialists. Looking through the 3D team members i looked at the main 3D model creator Sam Yang. Yang is responsible for creating the finalised 3D models that contain all of the small intricate details that will be found in the game that they produce and is their main selling point. this means a lot of responsibilities are put onto Yang to create a high standard of work that will further enhance their customers experience during play and keep them interested in that game.
i wanted to look at someone that had this high level of responsibility in a games retail area because i wanted to see how people worked who didn't create art for self want but rather for business needs. i anted to see how they approached it because those who create art for self wants normally have some sort of attachment to their work because they created it for personal reasons. i wanted to see what Yang's response to his own work was because i never created this work because he wanted to but because he had to and knowing this i thought that this would make him feel detached from this work because it was not born out of inspiration and creativity but rather because someone handed him a design sheet and told him to render out this model in 3D.

However even after taking all of these thoughts into consideration, after following his blogs and reading his outposts on his work he actually seems rather happy and more then happy to create this work and displays a positive attitude when reviewing them and creation. Yang seems to take great pleasure in being able to replicate someones 2D drawing and remaking it in 3D even to the point when he has not been given the task of creating a 3D remodel he takes random characters and creates them in 3D. I think that maybe i expected a negative attitude from Yang because that's how i would respond. I like to have creative control over my pieces of work and like to create my own characters and not copy someone else. Also further more i find 3D modelling to be one of my weaker areas and have a distaste for it anyways. However after looking at Yang's 3D models I'm intrigued into the stylization of them as when i first saw one of his final pieces i thought it was a digital painting, it has inspired me to further look into the uses of Zbrush and its methods and techniques.
