Year Two Animation - Final Year Evaluation
Year Two Animation - Final Year Evaluation
As a final review and look back of this academic year
i feel that this year has been a huge step forward to me as a
studying student learning animation skills but also as an artist
myself working for personal progression outside of academic learning.
this year i have further progressed my skills as a traditional
artist, learning how to draw anatomy more accurately, also as a
digital artist and animator. i have done this by using programs I'm
more unfamiliar with and taking a step back from programs i use a lot
such as Photoshop.
I would say my furthest advancement program wise this
year was adobe after effects. Its the program i most get frustrated
at because i find it's interface to be very cumbersome and cluttered
unlike its partners Photoshop and illustrator. i knew that i couldn't
just ignore the program as it would be a huge weakness in my skill
set and that problems would arise later when given potential work
that required knowledge in use of that program.
At the end of this academic year i can say that i
defiantly feel more confident in using after effects because i was
able to experiment and develop my skills using the program in several
of my modules this year. in each separate use of the program i
learned different skills in different uses of the feature. i learned
how to deform visuals using puppet point, i learned how to stabilise
footage using the stabilisation features and i also learned how to
create overlay and filter features that i would be used to using in
Photoshop. all of the skills i got to learn this year and from
knowing very little to begin with i feel that these advancements have
changed my attitude towards the use of the program. usually i would
avoid it at all costs and rather use cinema 4D to animate scenes i
now feel confident enough to create an animation in adobe after
effects and knew enough to great a successful animation to meet a
task or brief set to me.
I feel that it has been very important to me that I
have been able to develop my skills in adobe after effects. I feel
that if I had not learned as much as I have now that I would have
failed multiple modules or gotten a lot lower marks. Three of my
modules this year were after effects based and these were bigger
module of the year such as our animated short and two live briefs for
Loop de Loop and DCM pictures. Two of these project being live briefs
means I also had a time plan to work in and a dead set deadline that
would not have any leeway. I know from my own observations in the
past academic year that I highly got frustrated by after effects
because i did not understand the tool and interface. Knowing this
and that these projects would happen sooner or later I made sure that
in my personal animation project based on my own characters would be
the best opportunity to create a stage where I could learn as much as
I can about the project before the live brief based projects came
about.
During my animated short creation I used as many
different effects and set up that I could. I created scenes that were
made from one image but the character seem to travel from one place
to another. I developed and imported in hand drawn pose to pose run
cycles which taught me the base knowledge of the after effects time
line and how that was composed together and how it functioned. After
this I created a different type of setting that was built up from
different layers to show background depth and had my character
interactions happen on different layers so they were able to interact
with the environment. I further supplemented my knowledge of the
different capabilities of the program by trying various filters and
variations on asset setting such as different blurs, opacity and
movement key frames.
All of these skills and advancement in knowledge
greatly helped my future module. I feel that if I had not learned
this before hand that I would have been stuck learning this half way
through my live brief and I would have lost valuable production time
and quality of work. This also let me focus in learning from my live
briefs and gaining experience as a professional artist. If I had to
learn after effects during this time i don’t think I would have
gotten the working experience that I did during this time.
Live briefs and competitions allowed me to experience
and understand what the artist working community will be like and
what I will be expected to do and achieve when handling a brief from
a client. I understand now how to stick to guidelines and what the
entail and what will happen if I do not follow them. Also how to plan
out my time and where I should focus and dedicate the most time to. I
know where my skills in these tasks lye and how I can apply this to
generate my work in a more effective manner that will improve my
quality of work for not only myself and the client.
Although my greatest advancement this year has been
improving my mindset and preparing me for freelance artist work it
has made me realise some important this for myself and let me realise
what I really want to do and how i want to progress. During this time
I have seen how competitive the artist world is and for me there is a
greater need for a more stable and definite working environment. Due
to this I had the self realisation that I want to teach art. Im glad
that I have thought of this now and I can start preparing to apply
for teacher training and a student teacher placement. Whilst I have
learned a lot skills based wise this year this is the greatest thing
for me to have realised and learned because before hand I didn't know
exactly where I wanted to be. I knew I wanted to be involved with art
but I didn’t know exactly how. Now that I know where I wanted to be
I can say in this evaluation that the most important part of my
personal and professional development this year was my own personal
realisation of career choice.
Module 8 Evaluation - Work Based Learning
Module 8 Evaluation - Work Based Learning
For my work based learning module i have created a
series of different pieces of work that show and supplement my
progression and development towards creating a set of skill that
further support towards my role as a working artist. these include
setting up production pieces that support me taking on animation
briefs. Production work includes a script, storyboards, and a
proposal to what i will produce and achieve throughout the brief and
planning of work, time and budget management. To put this work into
effect I also created a live brief in which i would use this skill to
show my progression as a commercial artist.
For my script based work i planned out each scene for
my lion and mouse animation. this involved writing down and spoken
words, background noise, scene changes, actions and narration. this
had to be done in chronological order and followed a narrative which
would later transpire into my actual animation for that module. I
found that creating a script greatly improved animation production
rate as I had a guideline to follow when creating visuals. this meant
that there was no making things up as I go along and i had a set out
plan of what i had to create visuals wise and all the directions and
actions were written down by me. This prevented me from adding
unnecessary scenes or accidentally missing scenes out. i feel that
this improved by work based ethic and i will use this again in future
animation production as it seems to be a great aspect that
supplements my work rate.
After firstly creating my script for the animation i
needed then to create some visuals to support it in pre-production.
this was achieved by creating a series of storyboards that mapped out
the basic visuals of each scene that transitioned the story from one
section to another that the scenes were close enough together that
you could string the story together. I decided to create these in a
traditional media rather then creating a digital version. I feel that
in my work personally that i prefer all of my pre-production notes
and development to be in traditional media because i feel more
comfortable in expressing myself in drawing by hand. I feel sometimes
that basic ideas become too refined when created digitally because
you have more means and ways to edit them.
After creating the majority of my planning and the
means to understand what my animation will contain and require to be
created for it I began writing down my proposal and treatment that
will explain what i have to achieve, how I will achieve it, what i
will create, how i will create it, what means and needs i will need
to do this and the relevant costs and materials in including time
frames that i will need to sustain and attend to during production.
The proposal was also supported by development and
reference images of my character. This showed that I already had
something to work from and a way to sustain my work and build it up
from previous ideas and practical work. This allowed me to further
map out my proposal and treatment by documenting where I would get my
visuals from and where my animation was progressing from. This showed
accurate time planning as I based out my project focus areas based on
what I had to create and what had already created. This also let me
know what I had not created yet and what would be most time consuming
and how I should apply myself to this accordingly. These skkills will
be important for future client work as it prepares me for a more
successful way to go about a working ethic and how I should go about
non-academic based live briefs in order to approach them at an
appropriate level.
This treatment also explains why i am creating the
animation and my ideas and concept behind it and what i, the client
and the audience will gain from it and how i want to convey to those
audiences. This self written proposal also explains what the criteria
for failure and success was and i attended to all of these requires
and fulfilled all of the appropriate and relative requirements that
allowed me to achieve my goal.
I feel that my written proposal was successful in
being informative to everyone and that anybody would be able to
understand and follow it and understand the train of thought in it.
Also that if anyone was given my proposal as a task for them they
would be able to follow the route and plans in it and would also
achieve the requirements to pass. I found writing this very difficult
as Ive never written such a highly detailed plan before if it were
even for myself or not. I feel i gain a lot of experience writing out
a brief for myself and now understand them more and what they are
asking of me when given them in the future. its also a good way of
writing out a plan for personal tasks and achievements that i may wan
to make in my own time or if i start doing more competitions
freelance.
I was later able to apply my abilities in writing
self proposals by setting up my own live task brief for my work based
learning live brief task. In this task I was required to write my own
time plan, purpose and achievement criteria that would allow me to
pass and succeed in the brief. Mine was slightly different from
others as other live briefs and competitions came with a deadline and
outline for people to follow. As this was simply booking a slot at a
stall at a convention I had to apply my own requirements and task
outline and form a standard of completion and success. I felt that my
previous knowledge that I gained from writing my proposal and
treatment for my animated short help supplement this task and gave me
some ground knowledge to work up from.
Personal development in skill was showed in the
illustrations I developed and created for this task. I feel that when
looking back on this task I seen a definite improvement from my
digital painting at the start of the academic year to now. I feel
that my final products created for my final outcome are to a very
high standard for my skill level and im happy that I was able to
achieve this throughout this task as because of the short time frame
I could of easily rushed it and produce a lesser standard of work.
This builds my confidence as a artist and lets me know that I am
improving and getting better with each module I complete. However one
point that I feel that was made prominent to me is that I do a lot of
fan based artwork and I feel that I need to leave that area of focus
and work towards more self generated ideas and concepts.
I feel that this year was more heavily based on
attaining the correct sections of criteria given to us and was more
strict on us following exactly what they wanted us to do. Whilst
frustrating at time being taken away from some creative freedom I
feel that it has also been an important lesson for us because we need
to understand that this will happen a lot and we should learn how to
combat tasks like this and approach them in a professional manner
instead of just refusing to do it and this will only lower our
reputation as artists. I've enjoyed my work based learning module and
feel I’ve gotten a lot of experience form it that will prepare me
for future work.
Progression - Job Oppourtunities - Art Teacher
Progression - Job Opportunities - Art Teacher
Thinking about my personal development and progression in my field i decided to research more upon potential job opportunities and career paths. one that has become very interesting to me and a strong choice is to become an art teacher. there is a range of reasons i would want to do this job, the most prominent being security and rate of pay. i feel that although no job is 100% secure that being a teacher would be more secure financially then being a freelance artist. As a freelancer work may never come about for months however when looking into being a teacher i saw over 20 listings on Newcastle City Council website asking for art teachers. This become immediately appealing to me and only progressed even further when i seen that the wages are also very well paying.
I guess that i am looking at this job as a way of not fulfilling my personal want but just being able to live comfortable, while it would be the dream job to create art all the time and sell is for X amounts, its very hard to climb up to that point and it may never happen. With a job as an art teacher i can have that comfort of knowing I'm able to get work as a permanent member of staff or as a supply teacher and furthermore whilst doing this i can create artwork in my own time and still attend to that dream of being a successful freelance artist.
To go about achieving this position and title i would first have to complete my full honours degree which would be my third year at college or university. After this i would then go into one of two route of becoming a teacher. the first route is at a university where i study to become a teacher in a non-working role where i receive a small grant to cover the year. the second option is a GPT where i would be employed as a member of student staff at a school or college and work with an art teacher and i would be classed as working for the school and cover my costs by being paid by the school. Whilst it was all good and informative reading online about this i felt it would be batter to understand how to go about this by asking an actual teacher. I had the ease and bonus of having friends who are or were teachers. I asked them about how they liked their jobs and what they went through to get there. i understand its hard work and takes a lot of time up but after hearing their opinions i feel that it would for me be very rewarding personally and materialistically.
Teacher training research 2014
Sunderland University
This initial teacher training course equips you to share
your passion for English with young people and inspire them to fulfil their
potential. English is a core subject in the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3
and 4 so there will always be a need for effective and committed English
teachers.
The
course prepares you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is an essential
qualification for teaching in state-maintained schools. The Government is
offering scholarships to attract more graduates into teaching, and so students
training to become English teachers in 2014/15 can access up to £9,000 in
Government bursaries.
The course has two strands. The first strand is based
at the University and provides a solid grounding in theory and practical
issues. The second strand is based in partner schools where you will undertake
practical teaching experience. A high proportion of our trainees subsequently
obtain teaching posts in schools where they have completed successful placements.
The
University of Sunderland is one of only 25 ‘outstanding’ teacher-training
institutions in the UK, according to Ofsted. So you can be confident that our
courses are excellent preparation for a satisfying and rewarding career.
The
2011 Ofsted report on our secondary provision rated Sunderland as ‘outstanding’
for attainment of trainees, capacity to fulfil the potential of trainees, and
effective and efficient use of resources.
The Ofsted report on our secondary
phase also included the following comments: “all aspects of training are highly
coherent”; “there is a very high level of commitment from all staff”; “strong
attention is paid to individual needs”.
In addition to Government bursaries,
students on this course are also eligible for many of the University of
Sunderland scholarships. Full details of the Sunderland scholarships available

Progression - Universities/College - Final year of Degree
For further progression into the study of animation and illustration i have decided to continue with my education at Newcastle College and advance to my third year of study in the Creative Industries. To peruse this continuation i applied for an interview with the team leaders at the department where the third year students study. After applying to the course i was rewarded with an interview to apply for my third year and to have an an opportunity to demonstrate my abilities by creating a portfolio of artwork.
Upon creating my portfolio i did not just select my own preferred artwork but instead a ranged theme or work that demonstrated abilities expressed in character creation, 3D animation, character reference sheets, traditional media and digital paintings all in different styles and focuses. I felt that this was an important feature to include in my portfolio as i did not want to seem to only have one skill set in illustration but prove myself to be a wide ranged artist that's keen on trying new things and producing a vast variety of work. This way of constructing my portfolio was successful and after my interview i was given a placement on the course. this placement is conditional and my requirement to fulfil in to pass my current year in animation. to do this i will upkeep my current level of work or more and complete all of my work until my final hand in and hopefully achieve the pass rate it am required to advance.

Weekly Reflection - Personal Work
Weekly Reflection - Personal Work
In the past week i have been creating artwork for my live brief project, NCL-Con Convention, in my weekly review of work i have selected on of my favourite pieces that i have created this week.
the piece that i have created is based on Hayao Miyazaki's character from his Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke. The reason i selected this charcer and film is becuase it is a well known film amoungst the genral target audiance i am aiming for in anime fans. Studio Ghibli films make it in cinema's all across the wrold and Studio Ghibli's film Spirited Away winning an osccar in 2001. So this shows its mass popularity and its reputation as an amazing series of films, becoming so well known that they now work with Disney to create their films. Company director Hayao Miyazaki has such enthusiasm and decication to his animations that he has come out of retirment 4 times just to create more films.
Not only have i decided to create a Mononoke basedp iece of artwork becuase i'm knowlgable pf its popularity but als these films are lose to me as an artist. Visuals and charcters foundi n these films have always inspired me to create more and more artwork of this i just imagine up and have fun when creating my charcters and make them how i want them to be no matter how weird they are.
In this piece of artwork i chose a totally new methods of digital painting. i normally create my artwork in grey scale first to work out the lighting and shadows in the piece. however sometimes i feel that no matter how much i layer up color it always somehow seems dull. so as an experiment i decided to paint all of this on one layer straight in color. whilst i had less control of lighting and colors i found it to create an interesting effect in my work where i feel that more natural lighting and shading tones and colors shone through in my work. looking at specific parts in the painting if we look at the fur around her neck and back, there is a wide variety of shades and colors in the shadows and i just feel that this is more visually pleasing then using the Rembrandt technique of painting in grey scale first as i feel it can dulled the image overall and maybe even making coloring too easy ? maybe its better with experimental mistakes.
I'm very happy with the overall outcome and i feel I've made personal progress as an artist and finding my own styles and techniques as this has been a total change to my normal drawing style and ways in method.

Riot
Games was established in 2006 by entrepreneurial gamers who believe
that player-focused game development can result in great games. In 2009,
Riot released its debut title League of Legends to critical
and player acclaim. As the most played online PC game in the world, over
67 million play every month. Players form the foundation of our
community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the League of Legends experience.
We’re looking for humble but ambitious, razor-sharp professionals who can teach us a thing or two. We promise to return the favor. Like us, you take play seriously; you’re passionate about games. We embrace those who see things differently, aren’t afraid to experiment, and who have a healthy disregard for constraints.
That's where you come in.
As Illustrator, you’ll put stylus to Cintiq and create the splash art that represents the essence of a champion to millions of players every time they select a champ or load into a game. You’ll use your artistic eye and keen understanding of dynamic lighting, form and color to tell concise and evocative stories with your deft brushwork. Working in close collaboration with a team of talented and dedicated illustrators, concept artists, writers, animators and game developers, you’ll define and illustrate each champion’s unique place in the world of League of Legends.

You are:
- Artistic and experienced: with your artistic eye and keen understanding of dynamic lighting, form and color you would fit right in on museum walls; but unlike Van Gogh and Co., you’re more comfortable collaborating than hiding in a garret, and thrive on giving and receiving constructive, creative feedback
- Anatomically correct: you have advanced understanding of human and animal anatomy, but aren’t afraid to stretch the limits; exaggerated, stylized proportions feel perfectly balanced in your hands, and superheroes line up outside your studio hoping to be drawn in one of your staggeringly dynamic poses
- Productive and motivated: you believe artist’s block is for amateurs and you’re motivated to create nothing less than AAA splash at all times; you make creative decisions and drive projects forward and on time without ever sacrificing quality
- Genre-bending: you have cat-like reflexes for chasing a great yarn, whether in contemporary comic books or ancient mythology; you’re a versatile visualizer, capable of capturing a range of archetypes from fuzzy little scouts to ferocious void monsters
- A player-focused gamer: as an experienced League of Legends player yourself, gaming is as much a part of your artistic palette as painting tools you use; though your art's awesomeness commands attention, but you'd never let it upstage the holistic player experience
You will:
- Create key splash art for champions that tell their story through evocative, dynamic compositions

i really enjoy the unusual stylization in the linework of this piece of artwork. its a reoccurring theme amongst her artwork. the linework is very delicate and faint yet holds some strength amongst the image because of its unusual and sporadic change in forms from sharp edgy lines to circles and curls in shapes. furthermore the waif delicacy in the lines is further prominent by the anatomy of the hands, they seem to be almost broken and withered. i cannot decide weather or not i like this feature to her artwork.
judging from the changing gradient of the linework throughout this image i can only presume that she has used a screen or overlay filter on top of her linework layer. this means that she could have done all of the linework in one solid color then later on by using this feature she can freely alter her line color without disturbing the rest of the artwork.
i think what i enjoy the most about this piece is the very simplistic coloring of the artwork. it seems to be complicated but that just the shaded linework, the background coloring is practically just block color accompanied by a texture layer that takes the plainness away
i think one of the main reasons i enjoy this artwork is because its visuals are very close to that of Japanese artist yoshitaka amano, and Ive always followed and enjoyed his work, though his would be the traditional version compared to this digital piece.

S.W.O.T Analysis - Little Mermaid Digital Painting
S.W.O.T Analysis - Little Mermaid Digital Painting
i decided to evaluate some of my own digital work from my personal pieces in a s.w.o.t format to see how different my approach to the work style is.
My strengths approaching this piece is instantly my knowledge on digital painting at it being one of my strongest areas of work. this means i am confident and able to approach the piece of work quite easily knowing what tools to use to create the desired outcome i want to achieve. my secondary strength in this piece would be my use of research on female anatomy. this makes sketching out the piece quite simple as the basic shapes of the body are easily formed and recognized as i work.
weaknesses found in this piece is the drawing of creatures and background. i do not often draw creatures nor do i often draw backgrounds and i think that the difference in the level of painting of the female character is highly distinguisable to that of the rest of the image. the illustration of her looks far more confident and experianced to the odd positioning of the background. i feel that this piece highlights my weakness in this area and should be improved upon for further works.
I took this piece as an oppourtunity to see where my strengths and weaknesses are inside of digital painting. digital pianting is my strongest area and i feel that i shouldnt let certain aspects of it fall behind and i should level my skills all round. i took this as an oppourtunity as a self progress evaluation.
there was no real threat to this piece other then abandoning it half way through. sometimes when creating backgrounds i feel i have ruined a piece of artwork and give up on it. the only real threat to my personal work is self doubt.

Artist Research - Freelancer/digital painter - Sakimi Chan - Art Stores

Artist Research - Freelancer/digital painter - Sakimi Chan
Looking at the Artist Store
Looking at a non-commercial artist i decided to review one of my personal favourite blog based artists Sakimi Chan. Sakimi ( pen name ) is a Canadian based artist who rather then work for big companies or illustrate for books etc, rather opens internet based art store where they take commission fees from her for everything she sells. there are several online stores that use this function such as StoreEnvy, Society6 and deviant art. Since these site print the artwork for her this removes all of the postal work for her and she can just focus on creating multitudes of artwork to upload and sell.
this is one of the reasons i have been following this artist for some time now as i also wish to use this fucnction and have tried to in the past. i have two different views on this fuction of selling artwork. one is that we remove and need to do anything past creating the artwork. all of the hard chore is done for us. i see this as a positive becuase it gives the artist more time to focus on creating and also it coversthe cost of printing in the ocmmision fee meaning the artist dosen't have to find a printer then pay for postage too. one negitive point to thisi can see is that it removes the experiance of selling a poster to someone infront of you becuase theres no need to. i however, who have held stores at ocnventions, feel that this is a very important part of the process of getting to know and talk to your audiance face to face and discuss what they feel and think about your artwork. so im undecided if i like online print stores or not.
As for Sakimi's artwork I've been following it for the past few years and i really enjoy her mix of realism with cartoonism. though the skin texture and lighting and shading is all very realistic and the faces have that look of realism we can identify an underlying hint of cartoonism that makes the characters stand out more and have more of a visual presence on screen. Sakimi's works mainly contain the theme of transforming well known cartoon and film characters into her own rendition wether that involves remodeling them completely or just redrawing their basic design in her own style.

S.W.O.T - Live Brief Convention
S.W.O.T - Live Brief Convention
Following the completion of my live brief project i have evaluated the outcome based on my strengths, weaknesses and opportunities and the threats that came with them.
the strength for my live brief was defiantly in my knowledge of my target audience. to complete my task i had to develop artwork and print them out to take to an animation convention and to try and sell them to attendees at this convention. by knowing my target audience i was able to successfully select a certain category of artwork that i should spend my time developing to sell. i think that this was the most important strength to have as my entire stall could have failed if i created something unsuitable that nobody would buy.
my weaknesses would fall into pricing my prints. i find difficulty putting a lot of value onto my pieces because i critique my own work very harshly and had complains from people thinking mywork was too cheap. to combat this at my next convention i will try placing my prices slightly higher then what i normally do. i think this is related to my past problem of being too harsh on my own work generally not just as a product.
opportunities were to gain publicity and get interest in my work. this was notable when people asked for my web address or email. secondary oppourtunities to this was to make some sales on prints and gain profit in money. due to the size of the event i was lucky to break even.
threats to this project was cost of printing, not getting enough work completed and any external threats to the event out of my control that could of ended up with it being cancelled or delayed.

Weekly Reflection - Enhancing Old Artwork
Convention Opportunity
After completing my live brief project of the convention artwork creation stall i decided to reflect upon the opportunity i took towards my personal work. The first image below is an old watercolour painting i done last year for a convention in march. the painting is very old and outside my current stylisation of work. taking this as an opportunity to review and test the effects of digital manipulation i created two filter altered editions of my painting. the reason i created two was because i could not decide which eventual over casting colour i wanted on my piece.
To compare the differences between these two pieces, though very minutes, i think they vastly change the image when viewed from after. the image to the left contains a stronger magenta overlay cast over the image whereas the image to the right contains more speckled effect on the dragon's mane and has an overall yellow overlay cast onto the image. i couldn't decide which version of the image look better so to gather an outside view upon the image i took all three version to the convention.
after gathering a response at the convention and seeing which edition people bought the over all winner was the far right yellow cast digitally modified painting. however i was surprised that any people at all picked up the original edition but someone commented that they liked the darker tones and it gave the image a stronger edge in contrast.
Although at this event the Yellow cast was the more popular edition i plan to test this again in June at my stall at sunny con 3.
